What can a systems engineer teach us about building successful teams? Quite a bit, according to Dr. Ricardo Valerdi. Inspired by his experiences working with U of A coaches, administrators and respected business leaders, Valerdi recently published The Five-Tool Team, the subject of the latest CATalyst Chat at the U of A Scottsdale Center. Valerdi, a Systems and Industrial Engineering professor and the university’s NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative, joined Dr. Kimberly Ogden, Craig M. Berge Interim Dean of the College of Engineering, for a discussion on teamwork, leadership and decision-making. In addition to sharing key findings from his research and the formula behind high-performing teams, Valerdi responded to audience questions about applying his five tools during times of crisis and the potential impact of artificial intelligence on decision-making. The event drew a strong audience of alumni, community members and members of the Engineering Alumni Council, which co-sponsored the event, and attendees received a copy of the book.
